Elsie Addo Awadzi

Elsie Addo Awadzi is a financial lawyer who became Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana in February 2018, the second woman to hold a deputy governorship at the central bank.

She studied law at the University of Ghana, qualified at the Ghana School of Law in 1995, took an MBA in finance from the University of Ghana Business School and later an LLM in international business and economic law from Georgetown University. Her career of more than twenty-five years took her to Ghana, Japan, South Africa and the United Kingdom. She was a commissioner of Ghana's Securities and Exchange Commission for six years and then senior counsel in the IMF's legal department, advising on financial sector reform.

President Akufo-Addo appointed her to the Bank of Ghana in the middle of its clean-up of the banking sector, and she oversaw bank regulation and supervision as the central bank closed and merged failing banks. She was reappointed for a second term in 2022. She has chaired the Alliance for Financial Inclusion's committee on gender inclusive finance and written on public debt management and Islamic bank resolution.
