About Emmanuel Gyekye Tanoh
Emmanuel Kwesi Gyekye Tanoh was a teacher, lawyer and PNDC government minister who was Attorney-General and Secretary for Justice from 1988 to 1993. He was born at Agona Nsaba in the Central Region on 30 August 1925.
He went to Mfantsipim School and Achimota College, graduated from the University of St Andrews in 1951 and took a teaching certificate in London, then taught at Mfantsipim and the Government Secondary School in Takoradi. He was called to the English bar in 1958 and practised law in Ghana for many years.
Under the PNDC he was Central Regional Secretary from 1983, Secretary for Health from 1984 and Secretary for Chieftaincy from 1986, before becoming Attorney-General in December 1988. He served until 1993, when Anthony Forson succeeded him. He and his wife Alvira had four children, among them the politician Augustus "Goosie" Tanoh.
