George Kingsley Acquah

George Kingsley Acquah was Chief Justice of Ghana from July 2003 until his death on 25 March 2007. He was born at Sekondi on 4 March 1942 and was raised by his stepfather, Isaac Charles Acquah.

He went to several Methodist schools across the country as a child, then Adisadel College, and took a philosophy degree at the University of Ghana in 1967 and a law degree there in 1970. He was called to the bar in 1972 and practised in Cape Coast for seventeen years.

He became a High Court judge in Ho in 1989, an Appeal Court judge in 1994 and a Supreme Court justice in 1995. President Kufuor appointed him Chief Justice in 2003. He chaired the Judicial Service committee on reform and automation, the Judicial Council's disciplinary committee and the national committee on child rights, and was honorary legal adviser to the International Planned Parenthood Federation. He was made a Member of the Order of the Star of Ghana in 2006. He died of cancer in Accra, survived by his wife Jane and six children.
