Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo

Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo is a Ghanaian jurist who served as the Chief Justice of Ghana from June 2023 until her removal from office in September 2025, making her a central figure in one of the most consequential episodes in the history of the country's Fourth Republic judiciary. Born on 11 September 1962 and hailing from Winneba in the Central Region, she rose to the pinnacle of the judicial branch before her tenure ended amid unprecedented controversy.

Torkornoo built a substantial career in law before her appointment to the top judicial office. She practised and served on the bench through the ranks of the Ghanaian judiciary, gaining a reputation as a diligent and detail-oriented judge. Her elevation to Chief Justice in June 2023 placed her at the head of the judiciary at a time of intense public scrutiny of the courts and their independence.

As Chief Justice she presided over the administration of justice and the Supreme Court during a politically charged period. Her tenure, however, became the subject of petitions alleging misbehaviour, which triggered a constitutional process under Article 146 of Ghana's Constitution. A committee was established to investigate the claims, and she was suspended in April 2025 pending its findings, an extraordinary development for a sitting head of the judiciary.

On 1 September 2025 the committee concluded that grounds of stated misbehaviour had been established, and President John Dramani Mahama acted on its recommendation to remove her from office. Among the findings reported publicly were allegations that she authorised improper expenditures, including travel costs and per diems for family members through the judicial service. Her removal made her the first head of Ghana's judiciary in the Fourth Republic to be removed under the constitutional provision, a moment that provoked national debate about judicial independence and the fragility of institutional safeguards.

The circumstances of her exit have been fiercely contested, with some commentators defending the lawfulness of the process and others warning of the precedent it set for the separation of powers. Regardless of these debates, Torkornoo's career remains historically significant: she reached the highest judicial office in the land and her removal became a landmark constitutional event. Her legacy is now inseparable from the broader questions her case raised about accountability, due process and the resilience of Ghana's democratic institutions.
