Gustav Koranteng-Addow

Gustav Koranteng-Addow was a judge and Attorney-General under the Supreme Military Council from 1975 to 1979, who chaired the committee behind General Acheampong's Union Government plan. He was born at Akropong-Akuapem on 25 October 1918 and died on 12 February 1988.

He went to the Presbyterian Middle Boys' School in Akropong and Accra Academy, and was secretary to the Akuapem native authority before going to London in 1949 to study law. He returned in 1956 with an LLB, a diploma in air law and a call to the bar at the Middle Temple, and practised until he joined the bench in 1964. He later earned a doctorate at SOAS in London on customary arbitration.

He became Attorney-General on 9 October 1975. In 1977 his ad hoc committee toured the country and recommended a no-party "Union Government", which was put to a disputed referendum in March 1978. After Acheampong fell, Koranteng-Addow was relieved of his post for criticising the new regime's plan to return to party politics. He returned to the Court of Appeal in 1979 and retired on health grounds that May. He was married to Justice Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, who was murdered in 1982.
