About Joseph Kwaku Asamoah

Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah is a Ghanaian lawyer, accountant and academic who became a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) in October 2026. Some reports spell his middle name Kweku. President John Mahama swore him in at Jubilee House on 12 October 2026, alongside Emelia Afi Agbenyo.

Return to the Electoral Commission

The appointment takes Asamoah back to an institution he knows well. During an earlier career at the EC he served as Director of Finance, Director of the EC Training Centre and Head of Audit, and he worked on the 2012 and 2016 general elections as well as district-level polls. His professional profile credits him with setting up a replacement results system in 2016 after the electronic transmission system failed, a system it says was used in declaring the presidential results.

He and Agbenyo filled the places left by Dr Eric Bossman Asare, who resigned to return to academia, and Samuel Tettey, who retired. They serve under the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa.

Law and teaching

Before the appointment Asamoah lectured in the Department of Commercial Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He also practised as a barrister and solicitor with Asante-Krobea and Associates (AKA Legal).

Education

He holds a PhD in Political Economy and Diplomacy, a Master of Laws (LLM) in Commercial and Corporate Law, a master's degree in Accounting and Finance, and undergraduate degrees in Law and Accounting.
