Kwaku Azar

Stephen Kwaku Asare, known to most Ghanaians as Kwaku Azar, is a lawyer, accounting professor and one of the country's most widely read commentators on the Constitution, the courts and governance.

He graduated with first-class honours in accounting from the University of Ghana, took an MBA at Baylor University and a PhD in accounting at the University of Arizona, and earned a law degree cum laude from the University of Florida. He is the KPMG Professor of Accounting at the University of Florida's Warrington College of Business, a research professor at Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands, a Certified Fraud Examiner and a member of the Florida Bar. His research covers auditing, white-collar crime and governance in emerging democracies.

In Ghana he is best known for public interest litigation and commentary. In Asare v Attorney-General and General Legal Council, he challenged how the Ghana School of Law controlled entry to legal training, and the Supreme Court held that the admission rules had to be set by legislative instrument. He writes regularly on constitutional questions, from the removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo to dual citizenship, and in September 2026 called the attempt by EOCO to arrest an MP leaving court "totally unprofessional and unprecedented".
