Kweku Etrew Amua-Sekyi

Kweku Etrew Amua-Sekyi was a judge of the Supreme Courts of Ghana and The Gambia who chaired the National Reconciliation Commission from 2002 to 2004. He was born at Sekondi on 5 July 1933 and died on 17 May 2007.

Both his parents were traditional rulers, and his father was an MP under Busia. He went to Achimota Primary School and Osei Tutu Secondary School, finished school in London at Forest School and Dulwich College, and took a degree in economics and international relations at the London School of Economics. He joined the Ghana foreign service in 1958, then returned to London to read law and was called to the bar in 1965.

He practised for twelve years, founding Ekuadaa Chambers in Takoradi in 1968, and became a High Court judge in 1977 and an Appeal Court judge in 1986, reaching the Supreme Court in 1987. He later sat on the OAU Administrative Tribunal and the Supreme Court of The Gambia, and chaired the Council for Law Reporting. In 2002 he was appointed to lead the National Reconciliation Commission, which heard testimony on human rights abuses under Ghana's military governments. He married Georgina Hackman, a former tutor at Wesley Girls' High School, and they had three children.
