Martin Amidu

Martin Alamisi Burns Kaiser Amidu is a lawyer and anti-corruption campaigner who served as Attorney-General under President Mills and became Ghana's first Special Prosecutor under President Akufo-Addo. He is a Builsa from the Upper East Region.

NDC years

Amidu was Deputy Attorney-General through both Rawlings terms, from 1993 to 2001, and was John Atta Mills's running mate in the 2000 presidential election. After the NDC returned to power he became Minister for the Interior in January 2010 and then Attorney-General, until President Mills dismissed him in January 2012 after a dispute in cabinet over alleged financial impropriety.

The Woyome case

As a private citizen he took the Alfred Woyome judgment-debt payment to the Supreme Court on his own, a fight that added the word "gargantuan" to Ghanaian political vocabulary. In 2014 the court ordered Woyome to refund the money, a case that made Amidu a byword for dogged anti-corruption litigation.

Special Prosecutor

President Akufo-Addo, his political opponent, named him the first Special Prosecutor in January 2018, and he was sworn in on 23 February 2018. He resigned on 16 November 2020, accusing the president of interfering with his office over its assessment of the Agyapa Royalties gold deal and writing that he would not hold the office as a "poodle". Kissi Agyebeng succeeded him.
