About Benjamin Kunbuor
Dr Benjamin Kunbuor is a lawyer and legal scholar who served as Minister for Health, Minister for the Interior, Attorney-General and Minister for Defence under Presidents Mills and Mahama, and represented Nandom in the Upper West Region for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Warwick-trained lawyer
Kunbuor attended Nandom Secondary School, studied law at the University of Ghana and qualified at the Ghana School of Law. He took an LLM with distinction at the University of Warwick and then, as a Chevening scholar, a PhD in law in development there from 1997 to 2000. He taught at Warwick and the Ghana School of Law and was a director at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice.
Parliament and cabinet
He won Lawra-Nandom in 2000 and 2004 but lost it in 2008. In 2009 President Mills made him Minister for Health after George Sipa-Yankey resigned, then Minister for the Interior in 2011 and Attorney-General in 2012, after Martin Amidu left. He won the new Nandom seat in 2012, defeating Ambrose Dery, and has also served as Minister for Defence. Richard Kuuire of the NDC holds Nandom today.
