Ambrose Dery

Ambrose Dery is a lawyer who served as Ghana's Minister for the Interior for seven years, from 2017 to February 2024. A New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart from the Upper West Region, he represented Nandom until 2025. He was born on 23 August 1956.

Bolgatanga lawyer

Dery attended Navrongo Secondary School and studied law at the University of Ghana, and was called to the Bar in 1982. He co-founded a law practice in Bolgatanga with the late Laary Bimi and later set up Dery and Co in Accra. For ten years, from 1993 to 2003, he chaired the WaterAid Partner Round Table, a network of local NGOs working on water and sanitation.

Kufuor government

President Kufuor appointed him Deputy Attorney-General in 2003. He went on to serve as Upper West Regional Minister and as Minister of State at the Ministry of Justice.

Parliament and the Interior Ministry

He won the Lawra-Nandom seat in 2008 and served as Deputy Minority Leader, but lost to Benjamin Kunbuor in 2012. He came back in 2016 to win the new Nandom seat, and Akufo-Addo made him Interior Minister, responsible for the police, immigration, prisons and fire service. He was reappointed in 2021 and relieved of the post in February 2024. Richard Kuuire of the National Democratic Congress won Nandom in 2024.

Dery is a Catholic, married with one child.
