Andy Appiah-Kubi

Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi is a lawyer and businessman who represented Asante-Akim North in the Ashanti Region for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from 2017 to 2025, and was the country's Deputy Minister for Railways Development during Akufo-Addo's first term. He was born on 7 July 1957.

Free zones and private business

Appiah-Kubi came to politics with a long business record. He ran Ideal Veterinary Supply from 1989, was Ghana country director for AFEX International Group, and then spent eight years as deputy executive secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Board. He later founded Appiah-Kubi and Associates. All three of his degrees, a BA, an MBA and an LLB, are from the University of Ghana, and he also qualified at the Ghana School of Law.

Railways and Parliament

After winning the seat in 2016 he joined the Railways Development ministry as deputy, part of a government that promised to revive Ghana's rail network. He was re-elected in 2020 with close to two-thirds of the vote and later served on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Court clash

His 2020 candidacy was not without controversy. In September that year he faced contempt proceedings over claims that he had presented himself as the NPP candidate, with branded vehicles and billboards, despite a court order in a dispute over the primary.

In 2024 Asante-Akim North went to an independent, Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
