Anthony Mmieh

Anthony Mmieh is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician born on 13 May 1971 who serves as the Member of Parliament for the Odotobri constituency in the Bono Region. A member of the New Patriotic Party, he won the Odotobri seat in the 2024 general election and assumed office on 7 January 2025, becoming a first-term representative for a constituency in the Dormaa Central Municipal area of the Bono Region, while simultaneously positioning himself as a candid voice on the NPP's need for internal reform after the party's national defeat in December 2024.

Education and legal career

Mmieh attended St. Hubert Seminary in 1989 and proceeded to Achimota College for his GCE Advanced Level examinations, completing them in 1991. He then enrolled at the University of Ghana, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in 1997. His legal training followed, qualifying him as a lawyer and barrister, and he built his professional career in private legal practice. He serves as Managing Partner of Poku, Nyamaa and Associates, a law firm whose work encompasses the breadth of legal services that private practitioners in Ghana provide to individual and corporate clients. His legal career has given him a professional standing in the Bono Region that contributed to his political credibility ahead of his parliamentary campaign.

2024 election and parliamentary career

He was elected as NPP Member of Parliament for Odotobri in December 2024, assuming office in January 2025 as the NPP settled into its new role as the parliamentary Minority. Despite the NPP's heavy national defeat, he retained the seat for his party, maintaining a position in a Bono Region constituency where the NPP has historically been competitive.

Reform advocacy within the NPP

Shortly after his election, Mmieh became one of the more forthcoming NPP voices on the reasons for the party's 2024 losses. He argued publicly that the NPP's candidate selection process had become corrupted by money politics, with parliamentary nominations going to the highest bidders rather than the most capable and committed candidates. His call for an overhaul of the selection process to prioritise competence over financial resources was a direct and pointed contribution to the NPP's post-election reckoning about the internal reforms required to rebuild the party's electoral competitiveness.
