Anthony Abayifaa Karbo

Anthony Abayifaa Karbo is a New Patriotic Party (NPP) politician from a political family who represented Lawra in the Upper West Region from 2017 to 2021 and served as a Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways. He was born on 12 August 1979.

Royal and political roots

Karbo is a Dagaaba and a member of the Abayifaa royal family of Lawra. His father, Abayifaa Karbo, was a founding member of the Northern People's Party, the first MP for Lawra-Nandom and a leading opposition voice in the Nkrumah era.

Student leader

At the University for Development Studies, where he studied integrated development studies, he led the NPP's student wing, TESCON, on the Navrongo campus and became president of the university's Students' Representative Council in 2004. He took a master's in economic policy and international business at the University of Birmingham in 2006.

Party career

He returned to Ghana in 2007 at the request of Nana Akufo-Addo, joined the party's national research team and in 2008 coordinated Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's campaign as running mate. In 2010 he was elected NPP National Youth Organiser. After winning Lawra in 2016 he joined the roads ministry as deputy minister. Bede Ziedeng of the NDC holds Lawra today.
