About Ohene Kwame Frimpong

Ohene Kwame Frimpong, often called O.K. Frimpong, is a Ghanaian media entrepreneur and the independent Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North in the Ashanti Region. He won the seat in December 2024, defeating the long-serving NPP MP Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, and sits with the NDC majority caucus. Since May 2026 he has been held abroad in connection with a US-linked fraud investigation.

Early life and education

He was born on 23 September 1986 and hails from Agogo in Asante Akim. He attended Cosmos Preparatory School at Lapaz in Accra and Aggrey Memorial A.M.E. Zion Senior High School, studied at Central University in Ghana, and later at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) in the United Kingdom.

Business

Frimpong founded Salt Media GH, which runs Salt 95.9 FM, Salt TV and saltfmonline.com, and in 2021 launched the snack brand Bofrot Puff Puff. In 2024 he co-organised the rapper Medikal's concert at the Indigo at The O2 in London. His awards include African Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2021 African Achievers Awards and Emerging Media CEO of the Year at the 2021 National Communications Awards, and Avance Media listed him among its 50 most influential young Ghanaians in 2021.

Member of Parliament

In October 2023 he announced he would stand in Asante Akim North as an independent. He won the seat in the general election of 7 December 2024 and was sworn in on 7 January 2025. With three other independent MPs he joined the NDC majority caucus. He sits on the Roads and Transportation Committee and the Standing Orders Committee. In Agogo he has funded a new clinic and the reconstruction of the Agogo Central Mosque, for which the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, gave him a citation of honour.

Detention in the Netherlands

Over the weekend of 9 and 10 May 2026 Dutch officials detained Frimpong at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam shortly after his KLM flight from Accra landed. Parliament confirmed the detention on 12 May 2026. Ghanaian reports linked it to a United States investigation into alleged romance scams and money laundering involving about US$32 million, but no official charge sheet or statement from the FBI had been published. Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor questioned the length of his detention, and his predecessor, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said he must be presumed innocent. By August 2026 he had been held for about four months. He is presumed innocent unless a court finds otherwise.
