About Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is one of the most experienced legislators in Ghana's Fourth Republic, having served seven consecutive terms as Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency in Kumasi from January 1997 to January 2025. Over nearly three decades in parliament he held almost every senior legislative position available to him, from deputy whip to Majority Leader, and his departure from the chamber marked the end of an era for institutional parliamentary memory in Ghana. Born on 3 February 1957, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu hails from Bremang-Afrancho in Kumasi. He studied at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he earned a BSc in Planning, then worked as a project manager at DATAME Consult in Zimbabwe and Zambia between 1987 and 1989. He returned to Ghana and ran his own business from 1990 until his first election to parliament in 1996 for the New Patriotic Party. His rise through parliament's leadership structures was gradual but consistent. He served as Deputy Majority Whip, then Majority Chief Whip, then Deputy Majority Leader, before becoming Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs under President Kufuor between 2007 and 2009. When the NPP entered opposition after the 2008 election he became Minority Leader, holding that post from 2009 to 2017. After the NPP's return to power under Akufo-Addo he became Majority Leader and concurrently served as Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, coordinating the legislative programme across two terms. He stepped down as Majority Leader in February 2024, succeeded by Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Beyond parliament, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu served as Vice Chairman of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption and deputised as Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association International. Suame, the constituency he represented, is a major Kumasi industrial hub and home to one of West Africa's largest auto repair and fabrication clusters.
