Nicholas Yaw Boafo Adade

Nicholas Yaw Boafo Adade was a lawyer and judge who was Attorney-General in the Second Republic and acting Chief Justice from 1990 to 1991. He was born at Obogu in the Ashanti Region on 20 January 1927 and died on 14 May 2013.

He was head boy of Accra Academy, took an economics degree at the University College of the Gold Coast, where he led the National Union of Gold Coast Students, and was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1954. He built a leading practice at Yaanom Chambers in Kumasi, edited the Ghana Law Reports and lectured at the University of Ghana.

He was Attorney-General from April 1969, won the Asante Akim South seat in the 1969 election and then served as Minister of the Interior until the 1972 coup. He joined the movement against Acheampong's Union Government plan. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 1980, he acted as Chief Justice in 1990 and 1991, and led the majority in NPP v Attorney-General, which barred the state celebration of the 31 December coup as contrary to the 1992 Constitution.
