Phyllis Christian

Phyllis Maria Christian is a corporate and energy lawyer and the founder of ShawbellConsulting in Accra, and the fourth generation of her family in the law. She was born in 1956.

Her father, Howard Christian, was a lawyer, and her grandfather, the Dominica-born barrister George James Christian, sat on the Legislative Council. Her mother's father was Paa Grant, founding president of the United Gold Coast Convention. She went to Holy Child School in Cape Coast, took a degree in English and philosophy at the University of Ghana, then studied law there and international law and business at City University London, qualifying at the Ghana School of Law in 1981.

She founded ShawbellConsulting in 2002, and it was named best law consulting firm at the Offshore Ghana Oil and Gas Awards in 2014 and 2015. She has argued in the Daily Graphic for local content rules that reserve public contracts for Ghanaian firms. She has served on the boards of the Institute for Democratic Governance, on the advisory committee of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund and on Tullow Oil's Ghana advisory board, and chairs the Ghana Football Association's ethics committee.
