Sam Okudzeto

Samuel Awuku Okudzeto is one of Ghana's senior lawyers, a former Member of Parliament and a former president of the Ghana Bar Association. He was born around 1935 and grew up in Mafi Kumasi, Adidome and Anloga in the Volta Region.

After secondary school at Zion College in Anloga he taught and worked as a clerk, then studied accountancy in Leeds and law at King's College London, graduating in 1963. He joined Law Chambers in Accra and in 1971 founded his own firm, Sam Okudzeto and Associates, which trained lawyers including the future Supreme Court justice Nene Amegatcher. In the Second Republic he was a founder of the National Alliance of Liberals and was elected to Parliament. Under military rule he was tried for political reasons and was defended by Tsatsu Tsikata.

He has chaired Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, led the Ghana Bar Association, and sat on the Legal Aid Committee, the Prisons Service Council, the General Legal Council and the Judicial Council. Internationally he chaired the advisory commission of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative.
