Sophia Adinyira

Sophia Ophelia Adjeibea Adinyira is a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and a former judge of the United Nations Appeals Tribunal. She was born in Cape Coast.

She went to Fijai Secondary School and Wesley Girls' High School, trained at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, and was called to the bar in 1973. She spent fifteen years at the Attorney-General's department, becoming a principal state attorney in 1986, before joining the High Court in 1989. She moved to the Court of Appeal in 1999 and was appointed to the Supreme Court on 15 March 2006. From 2009 to 2016 she was also a judge of the UN Appeals Tribunal, sitting in New York and Geneva.

She has worked for children's rights for much of her career. She chaired the National Multisectoral Committee on Child Protection and drafted a juvenile justice policy for Ghana with the gender ministry and UNICEF, and was honoured for that work on the twentieth anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. She is an Anglican, chancellor of the Church of the Province of West Africa since 1993 and a former vice-moderator of the World Council of Churches. In 2019 she became the first woman and first lay person made a canon of St Peter's Cathedral in Koforidua. She is married with five children.
