Thérèse Striggner Scott

Therese Eppie Striggner Scott was a lawyer, judge and diplomat who became the first woman on the High Court of Zimbabwe and served as Ghana's ambassador to France and Italy. She was born on 29 October 1932 and died in Ghana on 5 September 2021, aged 88.

She was called to the bar at the Middle Temple and practised in Accra as principal partner of a legal consultancy. She sat on Ghana's High Court, and in 1983 became the first woman appointed to the High Court of Zimbabwe.

As ambassador to France, also accredited to the Holy See and UNESCO, she became in 1991 the first African woman on UNESCO's executive board; she was later ambassador to Italy. She chaired the Law Reform Commission of Ghana from 2000 to 2004, sat on the Goldstone Commission on public violence in South Africa and the ECOWAS Council of Elders, and in 2004 Kofi Annan appointed her to the five-member International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur.
