Yaw Darko Asare

Yaw Darko Asare is a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and a maritime law specialist, approved by Parliament in December 2023. He was born at Akropong-Akuapem in 1963.

He went to Okuapeman School and Aggrey Memorial Secondary School, read law at the University of Ghana and was called to the bar in 1988. He later studied international maritime law at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute in Malta, legislative drafting at Tulane University and port management in Israel.

He spent a decade at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, rising to senior legal officer, and in 2002 founded Beulah Chambers, which he led until 2019. He was vice-president of the Tema branch of the Ghana Bar Association. He joined the Court of Appeal on 17 December 2019, has taught maritime law to judges, naval officers and lawyers, and lectures at the University of Ghana School of Law. President Akufo-Addo nominated him to the Supreme Court in 2023, with Richard Adjei-Frimpong and Henry Anthony Kwofie. At his vetting he said the perception of judicial corruption ran ahead of the reality.
