Philip Bright Mensah

Philip Bright Mensah is a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, appointed in 2025, who rose through the Judicial Service from the job of court recorder. He was born at Amosima in the Central Region.

After school at Amosima and a course at the Commercial Service Institute in Cape Coast, he joined the Judicial Service in 1977 as a court recorder. He became an assistant registrar in 1979, a regional administrative officer in 1991 and deputy chief registrar in 1997, and qualified as a lawyer along the way, working for a time with the Legal Relief Trust. He later sat as a High Court judge and joined the Court of Appeal in 2019.

On the Court of Appeal he sat in two of the country's most watched cases. In the trial of former COCOBOD chief Stephen Opuni he ruled that the High Court should adopt the evidence already taken rather than start again, and he was on the panel that discharged Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa after the state dropped the ambulance case. At his Supreme Court vetting he called for 20 justices, a fully digital court system and training for judges in Chinese to cope with galamsey prosecutions. Parliament approved him in June 2025.
