Mariama Owusu

Mariama Owusu is a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, sworn in on 17 December 2019 after almost thirty years on the bench. She was born on 18 November 1954 in Daloa, Cote d'Ivoire, and comes from Beposo in the Ashanti Region.

She went to Asawase L/A Primary and Middle School and T. I. Ahmadiyya Secondary School in Kumasi, studied law at the University of Ghana and was called to the bar in November 1981. After national service at the Attorney-General's office in Kumasi she practised with Totoe Legal Services in the city from 1984 to 1990.

She became a district magistrate in 1990, a circuit judge in 1992 and a High Court judge in 2000, sitting in Kumasi, Sunyani and Tema, and was supervising High Court judge in Sunyani from 2003 to 2005. She was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2006. From 2014 to 2016 she led the Ghana chapter of the International Association of Women Judges. President Akufo-Addo nominated her to the Supreme Court in 2019, and she sat on the panel that heard the 2020 election petition.
