John Dramani Mahama

John Dramani Mahama holds a distinction no other Ghanaian politician can claim: he is the only person to be voted back into the presidency after losing it. Returned to power in the 2024 election, he became Ghana's president for a second, non-consecutive time in January 2025, capping one of the most persistent careers in the country's politics.

Early life

He was born on 29 November 1958 in Damongo, in what is now the Savannah Region, into a politically active family; his father served as a member of parliament and a regional commissioner under Kwame Nkrumah. He studied history at the University of Ghana, graduating in 1981, and later completed postgraduate studies in communication.

Rise through office

Mahama entered parliament in 1996 as a member of the National Democratic Congress and was re-elected repeatedly, serving as Minister of Communications before becoming vice president under John Evans Atta Mills in 2009. When Mills died in office in July 2012, Mahama succeeded him, and won the general election later that year in his own right.

Defeat and return

He lost the presidency to Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016 and again in 2020, but did not leave the stage. In December 2024 he defeated the sitting vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia, winning with more than 56 per cent of the vote, and was sworn in on 7 January 2025 as the sixth president of the Fourth Republic, an unprecedented comeback in Ghanaian politics.

Standing

Having served at nearly every level of Ghanaian and pan-African political office, Mahama returned to power as one of the most experienced leaders the country has produced, carrying the weight of expectation that came with his second chance.
