Johnson Kwadwo Asiedu Nketia
National Chairman, NDC • Politician
About Johnson Kwadwo Asiedu Nketia
Johnson Kwadwo Asiedu Nketia, popularly known by the nickname General Mosquito, is a veteran Ghanaian politician and the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, the party he has served in senior roles for more than two decades. Born on 24 December 1956 in Seikwa in what is now the Bono Region, he is one of the most durable and recognisable strategists in Ghanaian politics.
The fifth of nine children, he was born to Nana Kwaku Asiedu, a farmer of the Oyoko royal family, and Madam Hagar Akosua Afrah of the Akwamu royal family. He trained as a teacher and later studied at the University of Ghana Business School, earning a degree in business administration, and he also gained experience in banking. This mix of teaching, commerce and administration shaped the organisational discipline for which he became known in party politics.
Asiedu Nketia entered elective politics as Member of Parliament for the Wenchi West constituency, serving in the legislature for twelve years. Between 1997 and 2001 he served as a Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture responsible for crops. His real influence, however, came through party administration, and he went on to become the longest-serving General Secretary in the history of the NDC, a role in which he masterminded campaigns and managed the party's internal machinery through both victories and defeats.
His reputation as a sharp, persistent and combative operator earned him the enduring sobriquet General Mosquito, a nickname that captured his tenacity and his ability to needle political opponents. In December 2022 he made a significant transition, moving from the powerful post of General Secretary to become National Chairman of the party, the highest position in its organisational structure. From that seat he has continued to shape strategy and rally the party's base.
As National Chairman, Asiedu Nketia has remained a prominent public voice for the NDC, defending its positions, mobilising supporters and helping steer the party through electoral contests. His decades at the centre of the party's fortunes have made him a fixture of Ghana's Fourth Republic politics, respected by allies for his loyalty and organisational skill and reckoned with by rivals for his shrewdness. He continues to occupy a leading role in one of Ghana's two dominant political forces.
