Kwesi Amissah-Arthur

Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur was an economist who was Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2009 to 2012 and Vice-President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017 under John Mahama. He was born in Cape Coast on 29 April 1951 and died on 29 June 2018.

He went to Mfantsipim School and took degrees in economics at the University of Ghana, where he lectured through the 1980s. He was special assistant to finance secretary Kwesi Botchwey from 1983, Deputy Secretary and then Deputy Minister for Finance from 1986 to 1997, and later worked as a consultant for the World Bank and others.

President Mills made him Governor of the Bank of Ghana in October 2009. When Mills died in July 2012 and Mahama became President, Mahama chose him as Vice-President, and he was sworn in on 6 August 2012. He served until January 2017, and was Mahama's running mate again in the 2016 election, which the NDC lost.
