About Lariba Abudu
Lariba Zuweira Abudu is a special education teacher turned politician who served as Ghana's Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and represented Walewale in the North East Region for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from 2021 to 2025. She was born on 12 May 1966.
Education and development
Abudu earned a degree in special education in 2004 and a master's in leadership and development in 2015. From 2018 she was deputy chief executive of the Northern Development Authority, working on development projects across the north.
Minister
She won Walewale in 2020 after first defeating the sitting NPP MP, Dr Sagre Bambangi, a deputy agriculture minister, in the primary. President Akufo-Addo nominated her as gender minister in August 2022, and Parliament approved her on 22 December 2022. She was relieved of the post in the reshuffle of 14 February 2024.
Weeks earlier, on 27 January 2024, she had lost the Walewale primary to Dr Tia Kabiru Mahama, an economic adviser to Vice-President Bawumia, who went on to win the seat.
