Lydia Alhassan

Lydia Seyram Alhassan is a Ghanaian politician and businesswoman who represented the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region as a Member of Parliament on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party from 2019 to 2025. Her entry into national politics came under difficult personal circumstances, and her five-year parliamentary career centred on health, education and constituent welfare. Born on 1 January 1970, Alhassan built her professional reputation in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector long before entering politics. She holds a Bachelor of Administration degree from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and an MBA in Marketing from the University of Ghana Business School. As owner and operator of Lymens Medical Supplies Limited, a wholesale pharmaceutical company, she developed deep familiarity with Ghana's healthcare supply chain. She served as Vice Chairperson of the Pharmaceutical Importers and Wholesalers Association of Ghana, as an executive member of the Chamber of Pharmacy Ghana and as President of the Accra Premier Lions Club from 2005 to 2016. Her path to parliament opened after the sudden death of her husband, Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko, who had been the sitting NPP MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon. He passed away in November 2018 while receiving medical treatment in the United States. Alhassan contested the January 2019 by-election to fill the vacant seat and won decisively, capturing 68.80 percent of valid votes cast. The by-election attracted controversy over security incidents on polling day, but her mandate was upheld. She consolidated her position in the December 2020 general election, defeating NDC challenger John Dumelo by a margin of roughly 2,400 votes in one of the most closely watched constituency contests in the country. In Parliament, she served on the Select Committee on Health, drawing on her pharmaceutical background, as well as on the Mines and Energy and Business committees. She was also appointed Deputy Majority Whip. As MP, she established a constituency scholarship scheme benefiting over 1,000 students and ran programmes supporting women in small-scale enterprise and trade. In the December 2024 general election, Alhassan faced Dumelo for a second time. The result reversed their 2020 contest: Dumelo polled 40,561 votes to her 27,377, a swing that ended NPP dominance in the constituency and concluded her tenure in Parliament after a single term.
