About Mark Woyongo
Mark Owen Woyongo (1946 – 17 January 2024) was a journalist and National Democratic Congress (NDC) politician who served as Upper East Regional Minister, Minister for Defence and Minister for the Interior under President Mahama, and represented Navrongo Central from 2013 to 2017.
Information officer
Woyongo was born in Bolgatanga, attended Notre Dame Secondary School in Navrongo and studied journalism at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, graduating in 1971. He was public relations officer for the Upper East Regional Administration from 1978, regional information officer from 1985, and in 1994 became minister-counsellor for information at Ghana's High Commission in London.
Minister
He lost Navrongo Central narrowly in 2008, but President Mills appointed him Upper East Regional Minister in 2009, a post he kept under President Mahama. He won the seat in 2012, and in 2013 Mahama made him Minister for Defence and later Minister for the Interior.
He died on 17 January 2024, aged 77. He was married with two children. Simon Akibange Aworigo of the NDC holds Navrongo Central today.
