Ibrahim Mahama

Ibrahim Mahama is a Ghanaian businessman and the founder and chief executive of Engineers and Planners, a mining services and construction company that in April 2026 took over the Damang gold mine. He is the younger brother of President John Dramani Mahama.

Family and education

Mahama was born in Tamale on 29 January 1971. His father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, was the first Regional Commissioner of the Northern Region, and his mother, Joyce Tamakloe, came from Keta in the Volta Region. He attended Tamale Senior High School and then the College of North West London, and worked for a property development company in London before returning home.

Engineers and Planners

He founded Engineers and Planners in 1997. The company grew as a contractor to the big gold mines, hauling ore and moving earth, and employs more than 3,000 Ghanaians. In 2004 he started Asutsuare Poultry Farms, which reports output of 150,000 eggs and 10,000 broilers a day. He also built Dzata Cement, a wholly Ghanaian-owned cement plant in Tema: construction began in 2011 and production started in 2018.

Damang mine

Gold Fields' lease on the Damang mine in the Western Region expired in April 2025. The government granted a one-year extension and then put the concession out to tender, requiring bidders to show access to at least $500 million. Engineers and Planners won, secured the lease on 7 April 2026, and took over the mine at a handover ceremony on 18 April 2026 led by the Lands Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. Mahama promised an airport within six months, concrete roads towards Cape Coast within two years, and artificial football pitches for the surrounding communities.

Public giving

In March 2026 Engineers and Planners pledged $5 million as headline sponsor of the national fundraising campaign for the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup. When the government evacuated about 1,900 Ghanaians from South Africa in 2026, the company contributed GH₵16 million towards the cost. In February 2026 the University of Mines and Technology awarded him an honorary doctorate for his work in mining, construction and philanthropy.
