Joe Kpenge

Joe Kpenge is a Ghanaian sports administrator who was Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) from 2013 to 2017. President John Dramani Mahama appointed him. In 2017 the new government of President Nana Akufo-Addo named Robert Sarfo-Mensah to the post.

Four years at the authority

His term covered the 2015 All-Africa Games in Brazzaville and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In September 2015 Litina Travel and Tours sued the NSA over the contract to fly Team Ghana to Congo. Kpenge told Joy Sports that Africa Origin Travel and Tours had not handled the airlift alone and that the two firms had worked together, which Litina's lawyer disputed.

In July 2016, with only 16 Ghanaian athletes qualified for Rio and some critics asking whether the trip was worth the cost, he argued for sending them. "If we want to send athletes there, we want to send the best," he said.

Bishop Herman College

Kpenge is an old student of Bishop Herman College at Kpando in the Volta Region. In October 2014 he chaired a durbar of the Bishop Herman Old Boys Union held for the 80th birthday of Monsignor J. B. Eleeza, the school's first headmaster. "Father Eleeza is an institution," he told the gathering.

After office

He has stayed close to the authority. In September 2020 he and another former Director-General, Alice Attipoe, joined the then head, Peter Twumasi, at the funeral of NSA official Saka Acquaye. He is on the list of Directors-General of the National Sports Authority.
