Aliu Mahama

Alhaji Aliu Mahama was an engineer and New Patriotic Party politician who was Vice-President of Ghana from 2001 to 2009 under John Kufuor, the country's first Muslim Vice-President. He was born on 3 March 1946 and died at Korle Bu on 16 November 2012.

A Dagomba, he went to Government Secondary School in Tamale and took a degree in building technology at KNUST in 1971. He worked for the State Construction Corporation, rising to regional manager for the Northern Region, and in 1982 founded his own construction firm, LIDRA Limited. He chaired the Northern Regional Contractors Association and was a founding board member of the football club Real Tamale United.

After two terms as Vice-President he sought the NPP presidential nomination in 2007 but won only 6 per cent of delegates, and retired from politics. He was given a state funeral at the Independence Square and buried in Tamale. His son Farouk Aliu Mahama became MP for Yendi.
