Kissi Agyebeng

Kissi Agyebeng is a lawyer and law lecturer who has been Ghana's Special Prosecutor since August 2021, heading the independent office set up to investigate and prosecute corruption. He was born on 2 July 1978 and comes from Kwahu Nkwatia.

Education and practice

He went to Accra Academy and studied law at the University of Ghana, graduating in 2001 as the best law student of his year, then qualified at the Ghana School of Law and was called to the bar in 2003. He took master's degrees in marine and environmental law at Dalhousie University in Canada and in corporate law and securities regulation at Cornell. For fifteen years he taught criminal law and international humanitarian law at the University of Ghana, and also taught at the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College, GIMPA and other schools. In practice he worked at the Center for Public Interest Law and Ayine and Felli before founding Cromwell Gray LLP, and counted the journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and the footballer Asamoah Gyan among his clients. From 2019 he chaired the Electronic Communications Tribunal.

Special Prosecutor

Attorney-General Godfred Dame nominated him in April 2021 to replace Martin Amidu, who had resigned. Parliament approved him unanimously and President Akufo-Addo swore him in on 5 August 2021. His office has pursued some of the country's largest corruption cases, including an alleged GH₵280 million extortion scheme at the National Petroleum Authority and investigations involving former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta. It has also drawn sustained criticism over its methods, most loudly from the lawyer Martin Kpebu.
