Kobina Arku Korsah

Sir Kobina Arku Korsah was the first Ghanaian to become Chief Justice, taking office in the Gold Coast in 1956 and serving into Nkrumah's republic. He was born at Saltpond on 3 April 1894 and died on 25 January 1967.

He went to Mfantsipim School, took a BA at Fourah Bay College in 1915 and a law degree at the University of London in 1919, and returned home to practise commercial law. He was active in the National Congress of British West Africa and the Aborigines' Rights Protection Society, and won the Cape Coast seat in the Legislative Council in 1927, 1931 and 1935. In 1942 he and Nana Sir Ofori Atta became the first Africans on the colony's Executive Council.

He was one of the founding members of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1959. After the Kulungugu bomb attack on Nkrumah in 1962 he presided over the treason trial of five defendants. When the court acquitted three of them, including Ako Adjei and Tawia Adamafio, Nkrumah dismissed him as Chief Justice in December 1963. His son Roger Korsah became a judge of the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe.
