About Kofi Asante Ofori-Atta
Aaron Eugene Kofi Asante Ofori-Atta was an educator, lawyer and Convention People's Party politician who was the last Speaker of the First Republic, from 1965 to 1966. He was born at Kyebi on 12 December 1912 into the Ofori-Atta royal family and died in July 1978.
He went to Mfantsipim School and Achimota College and was principal of Abuakwa State College from 1944 to 1947, then studied law at Trinity College Dublin. Elected MP in 1954, he beat his relative J. B. Danquah for the Akim Abuakwa Central seat, and served in Nkrumah's governments as Minister of Communications, Local Government and Justice.
He became Speaker in June 1965 and held the post until the National Liberation Council suspended Parliament after the February 1966 coup. He was an uncle of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
