Austin Amissah

Austin Neeabeohe Evans Amissah was a judge, law professor and author who served as Ghana's Director of Public Prosecutions, Attorney-General, and President of the Court of Appeal of Botswana. He was born in Accra on 3 October 1930 and died in London on 20 January 2001.

He studied at Jesus College, Oxford and was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1955. He was Director of Public Prosecutions from 1962 to 1966 and then a judge of the Court of Appeal, on secondment from 1969 to 1974 as professor and dean of law at the University of Ghana. He also chaired the Law Reform Commission from 1969 to 1975, and was Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in 1979.

From 1981 until his death he sat on the Court of Appeal of Botswana, for a time as its president, while living in London. His Criminal Procedure in Ghana (1982) won the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa, and he also wrote The Contribution of Courts to Government: a West African View and Arbitration in Africa.
