Dennis Dominic Adjei

Dennis Dominic Adjei is a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, sworn in in July 2025, and a former judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. He was born on 25 March 1964.

Practice and the Court of Appeal

He went to Atwimaman Secondary School and Wenchi Methodist Secondary School, read law and linguistics at the University of Ghana and was called to the bar in 1993. He practised in Kumasi, first at Owusu Bempah Law Chambers and from 1999 at his own Holy Trinity Chambers, and led the Ashanti branch of the Ghana Bar Association from 2008 to 2010. He holds master's degrees from the University of London, Duke University and GIMPA.

He joined the Court of Appeal in 2010 and became one of the most active judges in the reform of the courts. He was twice president of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana, helped write the Ghana Sentencing Guidelines, directed the Judicial Training Institute from 2014, chaired the review of corruption offences in the Criminal Offences Act, and served as honorific dean of law at GIMPA. He has also taught at the Ghana School of Law and chaired the Africa Judicial Network on Environmental Law.

International and Supreme Court

He sat on the advisory committee on nominations of the International Criminal Court and in 2022 was elected a judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. President Mahama nominated him to the Supreme Court in April 2025. At his vetting he argued that judges should have discretion over the death penalty and that the ages of consent and marriage should both be 18. He is a Catholic and a fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.
