Dixon Kwame Afreh

Dixon Kwame Afreh was a law lecturer and judge who sat on the Supreme Court of Ghana from 2002 and presided over the fast-track trial that jailed two former NDC ministers. He was born on 25 March 1933, came from Barekese in the Ashanti Region, and died at Korle Bu in 2004.

He went to Achimota School, studied law at the University of Birmingham and took an LLM at the University of London, and was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1960. From 1962 to 1975 he taught at the University of Ghana law faculty, where he was acting dean and master of Commonwealth Hall; his students included John Atta Mills and Kwamena Ahwoi. He was Director of Legal Education and a chief state attorney.

His career took several turns. He was deputy general secretary of the Justice Party in the Second Republic, the AFRC's Commissioner for Information and Cocoa Affairs in 1979, and an administrator at the Pan-African News Agency in Dakar from 1981 to 1992. He was deputy electoral commissioner from 1992 to 1994, then joined the Court of Appeal. President Kufuor appointed him to the Supreme Court in March 2002, and in April 2003 his fast-track court sentenced former ministers Kwame Peprah and Ibrahim Adam to two years in prison.
