Edmund Alexander Lanquaye Bannerman

Edmund Alexander Lanquaye Bannerman was Chief Justice of Ghana in the Second Republic, from 1970 to 1972, until the military government that overthrew Busia removed him. He was born in Accra on 22 July 1915 and died there on 27 June 1983.

His father was organist and choirmaster of Wesley Methodist Church in Accra. He was senior prefect at Mfantsipim School in 1933, studied at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1939, then practised in the Gold Coast.

He taught at the Ghana School of Law from 1960 to 1964 and lectured at the University of Ghana, then served as a High Court judge in Tanzania from 1964 to 1967. Back home he was legal adviser to the Ghana Police and Ghana Airways. In 1970 Prime Minister Busia named him to the new Supreme Court; he acted as Chief Justice from that year and was confirmed in 1971. The National Redemption Council removed him after the coup of 13 January 1972.
