Avril Lovelace-Johnson

Avril Lovelace-Johnson is a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, sworn in on 17 December 2019. She was born in Accra on 30 April 1961.

She went to SNAPS Preparatory School, Wesley Girls' High School and Aburi Girls' Secondary School, studied law at the University of Ghana and was called to the bar in 1987. After national service at the Attorney-General's office in Koforidua she was an assistant state attorney in Accra, and in 1990 joined the bench as a district magistrate at Kibi and Tafo.

She was a circuit judge in Accra from 1994 and a High Court judge from 2002. Between 2005 and 2009 the Commonwealth Secretariat seconded her to The Gambia, where she sat on the High Court and as an additional judge of the Court of Appeal. She joined Ghana's Court of Appeal in 2012 and from 2014 to 2016 directed the Judicial Service's public complaints and court inspectorate unit. President Akufo-Addo nominated her to the Supreme Court in November 2019.
