Cecilia Koranteng-Addow

Cecilia Koranteng-Addow was a High Court judge who was abducted and murdered with two fellow judges and a retired army officer on 30 June 1982, under the PNDC. She was born Cecilia Afran Gaisie at Assin Nsuta on 24 May 1936.

She went to Holy Child School in Cape Coast, studied law at the University of Hull and was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1963. She practised with Opoku Acheampong and Company, joined the judiciary as a magistrate and became a High Court judge in 1975.

In 1980 she ordered the release of a businessman detained without justification after the 1979 uprising, and she was the first judge to question the AFRC's transitional provisions in the 1979 Constitution, freeing a person the AFRC had convicted. She also tried the GIHOC workers who stormed Parliament; one of their leaders, Joachim Amartey Quaye, later joined the PNDC and was convicted over her murder. She, Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee and Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong, and Major Sam Acquah were seized during curfew and killed at the Bundase military range. Her first husband was Nicholas Liverpool, later President of Dominica, and her second was Gustav Koranteng-Addow, a former Attorney-General.
