Georgina Theodora Wood

Georgina Theodora Wood was Chief Justice of Ghana from 2007 to 2017, the first woman to head the country's judiciary. She was born Georgina Lutterodt on 8 June 1947.

She went to Wesley Girls' High School and studied law at the University of Ghana, then served for three years as a police prosecutor with the rank of deputy superintendent. She joined the bench as a district magistrate in 1973 and rose through the Circuit and High Courts to preside over the Court of Appeal from 1991. President Kufuor appointed her to the Supreme Court in 2002. In 2006 she chaired the committee that investigated the disappearance of cocaine from the MV Benjamin.

Parliament approved her as Chief Justice by consensus in June 2007. In ten years she swore in four presidents, including John Mahama twice. She received the Order of the Star of Ghana in 2007, retired in June 2017 and joined the Council of State. She leads a choir at the Ringway Gospel Centre and is married to Edwin Wood, a retired banker.
