Geoffrey Bing

Geoffrey Henry Cecil Bing was a British barrister and Labour politician who became a close adviser to Kwame Nkrumah and Ghana's Attorney-General from 1957 to 1961. He was born near Belfast on 24 July 1909 and died on 24 April 1977.

He read history at Lincoln College, Oxford, was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1934 and reported on the Spanish Civil War. He was Labour MP for Hornchurch from 1945 to 1955, known as a leader of a small group of radicals, and campaigned to clear Timothy Evans of murder.

His legal practice in West Africa brought him close to Nkrumah, who made him Attorney-General in August 1957. He held the post until 1961, when George Commey Mills-Odoi became the first Ghanaian Attorney-General. After the 1966 coup he was arrested and ill-treated, and sent back to Britain some months later. His memoir of Nkrumah's Ghana, Reap the Whirlwind, appeared in 1968.
