Fred Swaniker

At 18 Fred Swaniker was running a secondary school his mother had founded. At Stanford Business School he wrote the plan for the African Leadership Academy, which opened in South Africa in 2004, and in 2019 Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Early life

Frederick Kenneth Swaniker was born in Ghana in 1976, the son of a lawyer and magistrate and an educator. His family left Ghana after a military coup when he was four, and he had lived in four African countries by 18. He studied at Macalester College in Minnesota and earned an MBA at Stanford in 2004 as an Arjay Miller Scholar.

African Leadership Group

African Leadership Academy, a school for young Africans with leadership potential, was the first part of what became the African Leadership Group. At a TED event in 2014 he announced plans for a network of African universities, and by the end of 2016 African Leadership University had campuses in Mauritius and Rwanda, with Graca Machel as chancellor. The group also runs ALX, a technology training programme. He also heads Sand Technologies, which works in data and artificial intelligence. Earlier ventures include the biotech firm Synexa Life Sciences.

Recognition

Echoing Green backed him in 2006, TED made him a fellow in 2009, and the World Economic Forum added him to its list of young global leaders in 2012. Time gave him a TIME100 Impact Award in 2023, and in 2024 Stanford gave him a President's Award for work that advances the common good. He sits on the board of the Rhodes Trust.
