Lil Win

Lil Win is the closest thing Kumawood has to a guaranteed draw. Born Kwadwo Nkansah, he turned a gift for broad, Twi-language comedy into one of the most bankable careers in Ghana's local film industry, and then extended it into music, business and education.

Early life

He was born on 15 April 1987 in Ahenkro Kwaman in the Ashanti Region. His formal schooling was brief; he has spoken openly about dropping out of junior high, a start that makes his later rise all the more unlikely and, for his fans, all the more relatable.

Kumawood stardom

Nkansah rose through Ghana's Kumawood industry in the early 2010s, the Kumasi-based, Twi-language wing of Ghanaian cinema. His physical comedy and everyman screen persona made him a fixture in productions such as Azonto Ghost, Onaapo, Pleasure or Pain, Abusua Boni and Satan, and he became one of the few names capable of selling a film on his own. He is often mentioned in the same breath as fellow Kumawood stars like Vivian Jill and Agya Koo.

Music

Acting was never the whole story. Lil Win has kept a parallel music career going alongside his films, releasing songs that have crossed from Kumasi into the wider Ghanaian pop conversation and given him a second stage entirely.

Off screen, his proudest venture is Great Minds International School in Kumasi, which he founded and runs. He also operates Wezzy Empire, his own film outfit, a move that put him in control of the productions he stars in rather than simply appearing in other people's.
