Nana Oforiatta Ayim

Nana Oforiatta Ayim is a Ghanaian writer, filmmaker, art historian, and cultural strategist whose work has positioned Accra as a genuine centre of global contemporary arts thinking. Across her novel, her films, her institutional work, and her encyclopaedic research project, she has pursued a single overarching ambition: to restore African knowledge systems and creative traditions to a self-authored place in the telling of human history. Raised across Germany, England, and her ancestral homeland in Ghana, Oforiatta Ayim grew up navigating multiple cultural registers, an experience that defined both her subject matter and her method. She studied Russian and Politics at the University of Bristol before moving into the arts. She earned a Master's degree in the History of African Art from SOAS University of London and spent time working in the Department of Political Affairs at the United Nations in New York. In 2018 she was awarded the inaugural Soros Arts Fellowship, and in the same year she was a Global South Visiting Fellow at Oxford University, where she was later appointed to the Advisory Council of the Cultural Programme. In Accra, Oforiatta Ayim founded the ANO Institute of Arts and Knowledge, which has operated since 2002 as a hybrid platform for exhibitions, education, and archival research. ANO has pioneered a pan-African Cultural Encyclopaedia, a long-term project to trace and document indigenous African knowledge systems, ontologies, and cultural expressions across the continent, linking historical figures and traditions to contemporary creative practice. The project has attracted collaboration from LACMA and other international institutions. She is also Creative Director of the Ghana Institute of Photography. Her debut novel The God Child, published by Bloomsbury in 2019 and Penguin in Germany in 2021, tells the story of a young girl caught between familial obligation, cultural inheritance, and personal freedom. Critics praised its lyrical precision and refusal of easy resolution. She curated Ghana's inaugural national pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2019, a milestone in the country's engagement with the world's most prominent contemporary art platform. She has received the 2015 Art and Technology Award from LACMA and the 2016 AIR Award.
