Ayittey Powers is best remembered for his rivalry with Bukom Banku. On 24 August 2026 police took him into custody over a video in which he allegedly threatened National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah; police said he was assisting investigations.
Boxing career
Michael Okine, known as Ayittey Powers, turned professional in 2000 and fought at cruiserweight and light heavyweight, finishing with more losses than wins over about 48 bouts. He lost to Braimah Kamoko (Bukom Banku) in Kumasi in December 2015, and a planned rematch in May 2016 collapsed after a row over the contract. That year he fought Daniel Mendes in London ahead of a planned York Hall bout with Mark Allen. He won a 2015 comeback fight against Anicet Amoussou but was later knocked out in the ninth round by Nigeria's Michael Gbenga in a national light heavyweight title fight.
After the ring
He set up Ayittey Powers Promotion and has insisted he never formally retired.
