Black Sherif

Black Sherif turned the restlessness of a Konongo childhood into some of the most affecting music Ghana has produced this decade. In barely two years he went from uploading songs online to selling out shows abroad, a rise built on a raw blend of drill, highlife and confessional writing that felt instantly his own.

Early life

He was born Mohammed Ismail Sherif on 9 January 2002 in Konongo, in the Ashanti Region. With his parents working abroad for long stretches, he grew up among extended family, an unsettled upbringing that later ran through his lyrics. He attended school in Konongo before completing his secondary education at Kumasi Academy.

Breakthrough

His rise began in 2021 with First Sermon in May and its follow-up Second Sermon in July, two songs that spread rapidly across Ghana and beyond. In March 2022 Kwaku the Traveller went to number one on Apple Music in both Ghana and Nigeria, and turned him from a local sensation into a continental name.

The Villain I Never Was

His debut album, The Villain I Never Was, arrived in October 2022. Anchored by Kwaku the Traveller, Soja, 45 and Konongo Zongo, it drew acclaim for its honesty and went on to pass a billion streams, one of the most successful Ghanaian debut albums of its era.

Awards and standing

The recognition followed quickly. He was named Artist of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards UK in 2022, took West African Artist of the Year at the Headies in 2023, and won Best International Flow at the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2023. Known to fans as Blacko, he has become the standard-bearer for a younger, grittier strain of Ghanaian music, proof that a specific, personal story can travel a very long way.
