Daniel Obinim

Daniel Obinim told his congregation in 2016 that he could turn himself and others into animals and objects. The claim drew ridicule from Britain's High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, but it was far from the most serious controversy around the founder of International God's Way Church.

Ministry

Obinim was born on 29 August 1977. His followers call him "Angel Obinim" after he declared himself an angel of God, and he has made other miraculous claims, including producing a passport for a church member who had lost his.

Controversies

In 2014 he was filmed stepping on a woman's stomach during a deliverance session, and Amnesty International Ghana called for him to be prosecuted for assault. In August 2016 he flogged two teenagers on live television, one of them pregnant, accusing them of fornication. The Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, reported him to the police's domestic violence unit and he was arrested. Hundreds of church members surrounded the police station demanding his release and were dispersed with a water cannon.

Divorce

His wife, the gospel singer Florence Obinim, asked the High Court in Accra in 2026 to end their marriage. At a service at his Tema branch on 13 October 2026, Obinim read out what he said were her demands. Most reports put them at GH₵2 million in damages, GH₵10,000 a month for medical support and several properties, including a mansion in Trassaco Valley and a house in Barcelona, although two outlets reported GH₵20 million. Obinim said he would contest the claims. The figures came from his own reading of the document and had not been checked against court records.
